CORNELIUS
→ Font Design
I love well crafted display fonts. My friends are quick to point this out and if you're reading this, you likely know that already. So what happens if you take my love of display type, pair it with my own quirks and humor; and then utilize those as rules in the highly iterative process of font design? Cornelius happens. Starting off with the high x-height and wide birth of Americana by Richard Isbell as inspiration, I began the design process with the intention of creating something sophisticated that follows the rules. Then something happened. Early on in the design process, I realized that my own personality should be embedded in this font. Instead of attempting to design something to satisfy a brief, I began asking myself questions like, "what do I think?" The style of this display font became so familiar, it reminded me of sitting in a smoky bowling alley watching my grandfather, Cornelius, compete in his weekly bowling league as a child. The bowling alley was a place frozen in time, much like the characteristics of this font—not quite right, but somehow just right.
