How can the beauty and precision of an ancient practice be celebrated in a fresh and contemporary way? I started by investigating the medium of wood from every possible perspective. I photographed several species of wood under a microscope to create lush textures. I built clear acrylic joinery, reflected light through it and photographed it to mimic traditional Japanese markings. These explorations and more were embedded into the design process of this visual identity. Perhaps most importantly, I put this medium into the hands of the museum-goer by hand crafting over forty letterforms out of solid cherry wood for an installation that allowed participants to feel the tactile qualities of wood while building their own sculptures. These letterforms were created from the typeface I designed for the institution which is based on simple joinery. Located on an incredible piece of land in Kyoto, the Museum of Carpentry + Tools was not receiving nearly enough praise for being the largest collection and showcase of the time honored Japanese methods of carpentry. It was the goal of this identity to grant this cultural entity the attention and respect it deserves.
